The NT triple-disc system is specifically designed for non till sowing and conditions with high levels of crop residue, where it is essential to open the seedbed with precision without unduly disturbing the soil structure. Its design combines three working discs with distinct functions, enabling the cutting of crop residue, the opening of the seedbed and the placement of the seed under optimal conditions for establishment.

The first element of the system is a 16-inch front turbo disc, responsible for making the initial cut through surface crop residues. This disc breaks up stubble and plant cover before the seed opener comes into play, preventing debris from interfering with furrow formation or the correct placement of the seed. Furthermore, it creates a pre-opening of the soil, facilitating penetration by the rear opening discs and reducing wear on these components.

This front disc is installed on high-strength elastomers, which allow it to absorb impacts from stones or obstacles and adapt to uneven ground. Thanks to this flexibility, the system maintains stable operation even on hard soils or those with abundant plant debris, ensuring a continuous flow of residues and preventing blockages during work.

ON WHICH SEED DRILLS IS IT AVAILABLE?

ALANA seed drills are three point hitched seeding equipment that requires a front hopper.
VESTA machines are high-capacity trolleys that can be fitted with various types of seeding equipment.
VESTA-P machines are high-capacity, pressurized trolleys that can be fitted with various types of seeding equipment.
The MAGDA NT seed drill has a working width of 12 metres and is foldable to 3 metres for transport.

Following the initial cut, the double disc comes into play; this consists of two discs of different diameters – 15 and 16 inches – which work in tandem to create the sowing furrow. The larger main disc performs the primary soil opening, whilst the second disc reinforces the formation of the furrow, achieving a more uniform and stable opening in which to place the seed. This configuration facilitates penetration into the soil and reduces resistance to the seeding row unit’s forward movement.

One of the key aspects of this design is the reduced opening angle between the discs, of approximately 8 degrees. Such a low angle minimises compaction of the furrow walls and reduces the downward force required to maintain the seeding row unit’s penetration, aided by a trapezoidal depth control wheel. This allows for greater energy efficiency, lower fuel consumption and less disturbance to the soil profile, factors that are particularly relevant in conservation agriculture systems.

The result is the formation of a clean, well-defined furrow, with a uniform depth and conditions suitable for ensuring good contact between the seed and the soil. This correct placement promotes faster and more uniform germination, contributing to even crop establishment even in situations of heavy vegetation cover or compacted soils.

Furthermore, the NT system configuration offers a significant advantage in wet soil conditions, where many non till systems based solely on discs may encounter difficulties due to soil build-up or imperfect furrow closing. The combination of the front turbo disc, which manages crop residues and pre-opens the soil, together with the low-angle double opening disc, ensures a cleaner flow of soil and residues, reducing the risk of clogging and guaranteeing more stable furrow formation. This means the system performs particularly well on plots with high moisture content or heavy soils, where other disc systems may suffer from reduced planting quality.

Recommended uses

  • Non till planting into stubble or plant cover
  • Fields with high levels of crop residue
  • Conservation agriculture systems
  • Wet or heavy soil conditions
  • Situations where minimal disturbance to the soil profile is required

Agronomic benefits

  • Better penetration in covered or compacted soils
  • Precise seedbed formation using a double disc
  • Less compaction of the seedbed walls due to the reduced opening angle
  • Good performance in wet soils, reducing clogging and build-up
  • Uniform seeding depth even in demanding conditions
  • Greater energy efficiency by reducing forward resistance
